Ovi Mail updated With Ovi Mail Setup app for S60

David Dueblin, Product Manager, Ovi Mail at Nokia Betalabs today introduce Ovi Mail Setup app for S60 and support for 4 additional languages on webmail. This handy small Ovi mail app helps to sign-up for new ovi mail account directly on Nokia device and  also configure the Nokia email client.



"-What it is

This application allows you to sign-up for an Ovi Mail account directly from your S60 device. Or if you already have an Ovi account it will provision Ovi Mail and configure the email client on the device. And it installs a handy icon in the Installations folder for easy access to Ovi Mail.

-What it isn’t

This is not an email client. You will continue using the existing email client on your device. If you’re already successfully using Ovi Mail on your device you don’t need to install this.

-Webmail

We have also silently launched an update to our webmail interface. We have simplified the navigation on the left and made it more consistent from page to page. And we’re trying to keep up with the global expansion of Ovi Mail and have added 4 additional languages: Thai, Simplified Chinese, Russian and Finnish. TuneWiki Brings Social Media Player For S60 5th Edition Devices

TuneWiki now developed its social media player for Symbian S60 5th Edition devices. The company reviewed its application at this year’s DEMOfall 09 demoing it on Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s recently announced X6 smartphone.According to TuneWiki the app can work on both S60 touch & non-touch devices, and users of Series 40 feature phones has to wait as its S60 TuneWiki app is under development.

What’s especially interesting about the S60 version of TuneWiki is that it offers a “Follow Me” feature, allowing a user’s social network to see what that user is listening to. The player also allows music videos to be viewed with subtitled lyrics, and the user can “blip” a link to his or her social networks to display the music being played.

The Symbian Blog today posted about 'Symbian Wiki Books'-Symbian Wiki is a online book about Python development on the Symbian platform, aimed to Python newbies. This Book is being created in collaboration with number of authors, all of them contributing to this book online. The book is already up with 10 chapters and taking shape of Online symbian Wiki, where you can also contribute.


"The book is aimed at those new to Python (on Symbian or indeed on any platform). Although the wiki text is not yet complete, it already forms an excellent resource. Mike Jipping’s chapter on Basic Python Elements is a great guide to the fundamentals of the language, while for those who already know Python, a chapter on Standalone Applications explains how to make Python much more accessible to users of Symbian devices. There are also chapters on User Interface Basics, the Touch User Interface, and Location Based Services.

If you’re interested in learning about Python, the wiki book is a very good place to start – and as you read it, if you have any corrections, feedback or ideas for improvement, please leave them as comments at the bottom of the wiki page. Roope over Nokia Betlabs Blog today introduce a new software for visually impaired called Nokia Braille Reader- which Nokia has developed as a joint project with Tampere University and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.
Nokia Betalabs:-
"We here at Nokia, and our partners as well, have been thinking of how to do something concrete about accessibility for quite some while. And now, our new Nokia Braille Reader application gives SMS for the blind and visually impaired. It captures received SMS messages and brings them to the foreground for reading using Braille and tactile feedback. Java Runtime 2.0 for Nokia S60 Now Updated

Nokia Java Runtime team over Nokia Belatabs has today release an update for Java Runtime 2.0 on S60. The update brings several smaller bug corrections, but the most significant fix is the change to the conversion functionality. The most noticeable thing I noticed is one-click application installation & improved execution performance.
Fixed in this update:
1-MIDlets are converted to internal mass storage if possible
2-MIDlet with large RMS can be started
3-MIDlets can access memory card root folder
4-Support all Nokia specific JAD attributes
5-Conversion will avoid situations where disk space might go below critical level
-
Minor changes:
1-Updates to eSWT widgets
2-Minor changes to bluetooth
3-Reduced the amount of debug logging, which should give minor performance improvement

Nokia N86 Now Going To Detect Face's In Next Firmware Update

Steve Litchfield over AAS has reported that the next firmware for the Nokia N86 8MP includes a 'Face Detection with Face Tracking' feature. The most wanted feature Mobile Photographer needed, now the Camera application can scan for human faces and will automatically focus on any that it finds.
 With this new feature the new firmware will also improve photo quality (less artefacts, better colours). This is first time Nokia incorporated its device with 'Face Detection' camera feature. As nokia N86 going to have it, I think Nokia should consider to make it available on its most lovable camera device the Nokia N82. What do you think please comment if you want to see this feature in Nokia N82.

Nokia has started the competition PUSH N900,a unique design, hacking & modding project for developers to make the most of N900 handset and open  Maemo software.

N900 surprised Nokia when it received the title of most popular device on display at Nokia World 09. Now Nokia is working on feed received on N900 by encouraging developers via Nokia PUSH N900 competition.


"The brief is simple: tell us how you would hack and mod the N900 & Maemo to connect the N900 to something you love. PUSH N900, participants need to submit their written, visual or video submission by October 5th. Submissions will be judged by an expert panel and winners announced on October 25th and the groups behind them will receive N900 devices, funding and support to develop their PUSH idea. And once they’re complete, we’ll share them with the rest of the world with a series of installations in Nokia Flagship Stores across the globe."

From last few weeks we have rumors of firmware update for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, but today Nokia made it finally available to world through the Nokia Software Update tool.The 5800 XpressMusic Firmware now goes to v31.2.008.



Update v31.0.008 include:

-Updates Nokia Maps to Ovi Maps 3.1
-Updated Ovi Store client to v1.05(231)
-Performance improvements.

What usually 5800 user are experted in this update:

-Kinetic Scrolling.
-New type Homescreen Layout.

It looks like Nokia dosen't want to bring the new look and feel of its new Touch Device Nokia 5530- so the new frimware is just a regular update with some patches and fixes with RAM boosting .

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic support UDP (User Data Preservation)-This means you should be able to update firmware without loosing your phone data. But we always recommend you to backup your all critical data using Nokia OVI Suite new Phone backup system.

Nokia 5800 Solar Compass: The Navi Machine

Yes yes yes ,I know that 5800 doesn't have in-built magnetic compass. However, this Navi Machine app can help you determine the direction to some extent. Navi machine is very simple to use, as long as the phone targeting the sun, the compass will automatically tell you what direction north statement: This is not a true navigation software, only for recreational use. If there is need for outdoor navigation, please use the GPS.

By the way here to tell you a little sense of life to use a pointer you can watch in a case of judging the direction of the sun. Applies only to the northern hemisphere will first convert the current time a 24-hour, and then divided by 2. Then the sun aligned with the proceeds of points, 12 point is the North.

For example: It is now 16:00, converted to 16 points, divided by two, with 8:00 aligned the sun, 12-point is the North.

Of course there's no built in compass in 5800 but if you know the time and see the sun it's easy to figure where's north. And that is what Navi Machine does. Just point the phone toward the sun and "N" tells you where north is .

Note:-This is not a real navigation device, use real compass or GPS when going outdoors.

A lot of buzz was going around about Nokia Location Based Gaming aka “Casual Location Gaming " in last few months, Folks from Nokia Conversation were lucky enough to grab a quick chat with Mark Ollila at NW09, Director of X-Media Solutions at Nokia about the next generation gaming. Hope so we will soon see some hot title coming on N-gage games loaded with Casual Location Gaming.


So what is “Casual location” gaming ?

In Location Based Gaming aka “Casual location” gaming you play with maps and do not need to be physically involved, but get a true game experience using your location. Casual location gaming utilizes your GPS together with GPRS, Wi-Fi Or 3G Internet to play.


"GLOBAL – Recently we were lucky enough to grab a quick chat with Mark Ollila, Director of X-Media Solutions at Nokia. An intriguing job title, indeed, backed up by an exciting role. See, Mark is responsible for running a worldwide team focused on creating new cross-media services, cross-media games (including N-Gage) and evolution of current services such as Ovi Share (whilst juggling and balancing plates on his head). Certainly, no small task. My favorite Themer and my friend Tehk7 has again made it- He released another great paid theme called "Evo Bold". The theme highlight is clear, and the background features very bold lines, which provides a cascading three-dimensional appearance, with much more clear and readable background. A must for every S60 device user.


One of the top S60 theme maker Tehk7 is doing some serious hard work to make our Nokia S60 devices more charming, generally all Nokia S60 user doesn't know the hard work behind creating the wallpaper, icon and the hard work of testing it in each and every device, believe me it take a lot of time to release any S60 theme. Spotify has now launched its application for Symbian S60 powered devices.
Spotify offers you legal and free access to a huge library of music with streaming on the go,It also allows you to share songs and playlists with friends, and even work together on collaborative playlists.



What is this 'Spotify' ?

Spotify is a proprietary peer-to-peer music streaming service that allows instant listening to specific tracks or albums with almost no buffering delay. Music can be browsed by artists, albums or created playlists as well as by direct searches. Although, due to the system's DRM, it is not possible to save the streamed music for use outside the application; a link is provided to allow the listener to directly purchase the material via partner retailers. The program/service in its free version is only available in parts of western Europe during the ongoing beta programme although the subscription model should be available in almost all countries.

Nokia is giving away new nokia devices in Nokia CityMan Competition, after seeing all of the great reactions to the Cityman Antitheft Nokia has decided to hold auditions in order to find the next Cityman! For those who don’t know, the Cityman Antitheft is designed to keep your N97 safe from criminally insane tech freaks


To enter, here’s what you do:

1. Use the Cityman Antitheft device and get someone to take a photo of you (80’s style gives you extra points!) If you haven’t managed to get your hands on the Super limited edition Cityman Antitheft, print this PDF and make your own.

2.Upload your picture to http://share.ovi.com/album/nokia_cityman.NokiaCitmanComp (By uploading a picture to this share online account you agree with competition terms and conditions and to be able to upload you need to be signed in to your Ovi account)

The deadline for submitting pictures is 5.10.09. Nokia jury selects the 10 best pictures that will be running towards becoming the Cityman 2009. The shortlisted pictures will be posted here at the Nseries blog where the visitors have two weeks to vote for the winner.

Nokia Messaging released a new update now called ‘Nokia Messaging Email’, bringing HTML support to S60 touchscreen devices, such as the Nokia N97 ,Nokia 5800 and Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. The new HTML support can be enabled as the default view, or set to manual, just like the previous S60v3 devices.

The update version also adds an adjustment to the synchronization frequency settings, with better support to touch screen.

On the second day of Nokia World 2009 Nokia has opened Ovi platform to developers worldwide. With Ovi SDK Beta, Now mobile developers can create applications, using Ovi’s rich mapping and positioning functionalities.Enriching applications with embed Ovi Maps within their website using the Ovi Maps Player API.




Ovi SDK Beta is your toolkit to create Ovi apps, which are easy to develop, mobile applications based on web technology that take user location as a starting point. Fully web-based, the Ovi SDK Beta runs as an extension to your PC browser, and includes:

-High-level JavaScript APIs to a rich set of Ovi functionality including 3D mapping and positioning (GPS) as well as turn-by-turn Walk and Drive navigation.
-UI framework and style guide takes you through the design process.
-UI library makes it easy to develop for mobile. UI components like lists, search boxes and menus, reduce the complexity of different screen sizes and device types.

Today Nokia Betalabs has announce another new service- Social Messaging with Nokia Messaging. Now you can choose how you want to respond to a friends post directly from the post (e.g. post a comment, call, SMS, or send a message) even share your current location in a post or in a message using Ovi Maps; view friends’ location.

As a part of Nokia Messaging, we expect operators to offer email, IM and in the future, mobile social networking all for one fixed low price. But this service is currently compatible with the N97 firmware version 12.X.024 or higher and the 6700 Classic -strange their is no support for S60 V3 device. According to Nokia Betalabs more devices will be supported eventually.

There is a new category called Get Inspired in the web service, where you can find inspiring articles from eco-minded bloggers on sustainable lifestyle and green places & events.Green Explorer is using Ovi Maps so that you can see the destination you are interested in on a map. This is currently only available on the web, but soon it will be available on mobile.
