Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for S60

Nokia Betalabs today releases Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 for S60 (JRT 2.0) is a totally re-written Java mobile execution environment for Nokia S60 devices. It gives you several usability and performance improvements, including:

-One-click application installation

-Improved application launch user experience

-Improved execution performance

These improvements will make it much more fun for you to enjoy the thousands of games and apps available in Ovi Store and elsewhere.

In addition, we have made major changes under the hood. From now on, Java Runtime will be developed and released independent from S60 releases. This means that you will always get the latest version directly to your phone, using the built-in Nokia S60 Software Update functionality.

Compatibility

S60 5th Edition: Java Runtime 2.0 for S60 has been tested with Nokia 5800 & Nokia N97.

Today Nokia Betalabs announces Nokia Messaging - E75 IM Beta. Nokia Messaging makes messaging easy and mobilizes consumer email and IM on your Nokia device.

"Nokia Messaging now offers a desktop-like IM experience on your Nokia S60 device. You can stay in contact with your friends across multiple communities, easily switch between and save conversations and login invisibly. IM is available today for the E75 - the first device bundled with a lifetime subscription to the Nokia Messaging service."

Nokia Betalabs will soon add support for more S60 devices and communities. Ovi Contacts and Ovi Mail are focused on the Ovi Community. Nokia Messaging mobilizes these as well as other communities like Yahoo!

Nokia Ovi Store: Content After One Month

The Nokia Ovi Store is now live for one month. In this month, more content was added to the store, more countries got access and the store now offers operator billing for 27 operators.

So what content is available now? A comparison of what was there at launch and what is available today in Ovi Store:

In one month, the available content grew with 260%. The percentage paid content decreased a little, but is still very high at 88%, compared to the other major stores. For applications the paid percentage is the lowest, 66%. Not surprisingly, the popular ringtones and wallpapers are almost all charged for (99%).

Getting your application or game in the Ovi Store requires Java or Symbian signing, which is quite an extra effort. Nevertheless, the available content is growing very fast, indicating that many developers are taking steps to get their app in Ovi Store.

The content available today may be content that was available in the past as well, the Symbian platform was already popular among mobile developers before the launch of Ovi. Nokia also already had it’s Download! application store, of which the content is being transferred to Ovi. We are curious to see how fast new content will be developed, especially considering the other application stores that do not require signing of the content.

Qt for S60 Technology Preview Released: Demo on N97

Nokia today released a Technology Preview of Qt for S60 – the upcoming new port of Qt for the Symbian OS. Preview packages are now available to commercial and open source users for download, testing and feedback.

This Technology Preview will be the last based on the Qt 4.5 branch. Future releases will be based on Qt 4.6. This release includes the following new functionality:

Partial Qt Webkit integration
Support for SQL
Improved exceptions safety for Qt Core library
Binary installer for emulator and phone
Overall performance improvements

The full release of Qt for S60 is scheduled for Q4 2009 in line with the Qt 4.6 program, including Beta and Release Candidate releases planned for the interim.

Got New Nokia S60 Device ,Data Transfer Frustration? Use Nokia Switch!

One of the main reasons why I love Nokia phone ,is that it uses smart Symbian OS operating system. And now I am going to tell you how to switch data between your loving nokia s60 devices.

When you have more then one Symbian S60 operated device you are frustrated between the scatted data over these two devices,and you have no idea how to transfer all your data (contacts, sms, mms, media, notes etc) from your old phone to your new one or how to synchronize both device. Nokia "Phone Switch" is the solution

To access Switch, go to Settings > Connectivity > Data Transfer > Phone Switch. (The location of Switch varies… if you don’t find it here, try looking under tools or utilities folder)

Switch allows you to send ,receive and synchronize data like Contacts, Calendar entries, Sms, Mms, Notes, Bookmarks , Photos and Videos from one S60 phone to another using bluetooth.

Steps:-
1. Switch on bluetooth on both phones.
2. Select “send” or “transfer” or "Sync"on your phone from which you want to send data.
3. Select your other phone from the “bluetooth devices menu”.?
4. Click on “accept transfer” on your new phone and its done

It will then begin transferring and after a few minutes, your new phone will have every single data from your old phone!

Adobe Flash 10 Beta for Smartphone Coming Soon

Adobe has announced released of its upcoming Flash Player 10 beta for smartphone in October,but according to a slide from its Q2 Fiscal Year 2009 earnings presentation, the platform's on track for a beta release this October at the company's MAX conference. Prime mobile OS candidates for the beta include those from Adobe's Open Screen Project, which at last count included Nokia, Palm, Google, and Microsoft -- and Surprisingly Apple iPhone is not mentioned in the supported devices, we will have to wait for the final announcement in the MAX conference.

S60 Betalabs: Now Testing the New Wibiya Toolbar

Some of you might have noticed a new toolbar at the bottom of the S60 Betalabs site.This is a small toolbar form "Wibiya" and its right now in Beta stage.Our blog is one of the selected S60 Mobile blog to carry out its testing.This toolbar help's reader to interact more closely with the author through its inbuilt functionality like- RSS feed, Facebook connect, lists the most recent posts, translating blog to different languages, checking out S60 Betalabs Twitter updates and addition to that you can join My Facebook community section and show your visits. If Wibiya Toolbar is annoying to you, you can even hide it by clicking the “Down Arrow” icon at the extreme right end of the bar.

As you all know our blog follows only updates from Symbian S60 and Nokia, but I have created a post about this new toolbar, the reason behind this new post is the key which connects readers to S60 Betalabs more firmly and we’re one of the few S60 Mobile related blogs to try this out.

Today Nokia Betalabs has released a updated version of Nokia Photo Browser with usability, quality, and functionality improvements for 3rd and 5th Edition devices.

Update contain:-

Menu -- long press in the grid view to bring it up
Folder sorting in the grid view -- accessible from the menu
Send function -- accessible from the menu
Image rotation and deletion -- accessible from the menu
Better rendering and image processing speed in general
Better zoom image quality -- needs a few seconds to load the sharper image

Another learning feature is that the touch UI seems to be offering much better user experience than that of non-touch UI.

Nokia Life Tools launched across India

As in my previous post I already defined Nokia Life Tools.Today Nokia Asia Pacific announce release of Nokia Life Tools service in India.

Mumbai, India - After a successful pilot in the state of Maharashtra, Nokia today announced the commercial launch of its pioneering Nokia Life Tools service in India. The service will be rolled out first in Maharashtra in association with the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB). Designed specifically for the emerging markets, Nokia Life Tools is a range of Agriculture, Education and Entertainment services sharply addressing the information gaps of target consumers.

Today, Nokia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the MSAMB. Under this MOU, MSAMB will provide expertise in the areas of commodity prices from their network of 291 local mandis (marketyards). MSAMB will also have the opportunity to deliver relevant news, alerts on schemes and other information directly to grassroots consumers.

Speaking at the occasion, Shri. Ashok Chavan, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra said, "We are happy that Maharashtra is the first state in India to go live with the Nokia Life Tools services in association with the state marketing board. BBC has now released BBC iPlayer for S60 FP1 Devices after S60 FP2 Device.iPlayer lets UK users to watch BBC programmes that have been broadcast in the last week.

If you are in the UK and connected to the internet you can:

Find and play programmes from the past seven days and watch them on the website through Click to Play (streaming). This works on Windows, Macs, Linux, Nintendo Wii and iPhones - and we're working on more ways.
Download and stream HD programmes.
Access BBC iPlayer on certain mobile phones.
Download programmes onto your computer, if it supports BBC iPlayer Desktop.

Final Update for Ovi Maps 3.0 Beta Released

Today Nokia Betalabs released final update for Ovi Maps 3.0 before its graduation.It is a sneak preview for the Beta Labs community before Maps 3.0Beta finally graduates from Beta Labs.The main part for this release is support for "Touch devices" S60 5th Edition- Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97.

Apart from this the new release includes:

Additional features such as weather information, safety spot warners in selected countries, extended country coverage for traffic info service and premium POI's (Point of Interest) content for travel, selected events and cinema
New maps data version
Quicker zooming & panning
New “Shop & Licenses” format
Also, a number of fixes and enhancements onto both Maps Updater and Map Loader have also been implemented - with Maps Updater supporting 21 different languages
Last but not least, many bugs have been fixed!

Files on Ovi Beta Lets you Access Your PC From Your Mobile for Free

Files on Ovi is a service offered by the Nokia, which helps you access “anytime files” that can be uploaded to the Files website, allowing you to access your files even if your PC is not turned on. Each basic Files account comes with 10 GB of storage, but a 30 GB will be available. This anytime file feature is free for now but will eventually become a premium service.

You have to download the supporting setup file once, this software connector gives you remote access to the computer and then you have to Login on it via your Nokia Ovi Account.Once setup is completed you are ready to access your PC via Nokia S60 Device-just go to files.ovi.com on you device and Login using Nokia Ovi Account.

Recently, Symbian Foundation has launched Symbian WRT Widget, Symbian.org has done an excellent job by creating lightweight widget that allows people to access the Symbian website (Forums, Wiki, Blogs and Bugzilla ) from their Symbian device on a simpler and faster way without even needing to go through an internet browser.

Once you start the widget, you’ll be prompted for your symbian.org username and password. If you don’t already have one, you’ll be able to register.

Waiting for Nokia N97 is now over ,Today Nokia official announce shipping date of the N97, but it will take a few weeks for it to get into most retail stores and Nokia priority shops.
